Important notice regarding equitable remuneration: gradual closing of previous years
Important notice regarding equitable remuneration: gradual closing of previous years
As you may already know, Canadian royalties under the equitable remuneration regime used to be paid retroactively, without a deadline for claiming them.
It will no longer be possible to claim Canadian royalties from equitable remuneration indefinitely, however. As is the case in several other countries, and for Canadian royalties from private copying, there will now be a deadline for claiming Canadian equitable remuneration royalties for a given year of use.
Each year of equitable remuneration royalties will become ineligible for new claims six years after royalties have first been paid out for that year. For previous years that have already been open for more than six years, you will need to comply with the following schedule when submitting your recording repertoire:
PERFORMERS’ REPERTOIRE REGISTRATION AND SUBMISSION SCHEDULE
Royalty years |
Repertoire registration and submission deadline |
1998-2000 | June 1, 2020 |
2001-2013 | June 1, 2021 |
2014-2016 | June 1, 2022 |
2017 | June 1, 2023 |
2018 | June 1, 2024 |
2019 | June 1, 2025 |
2020 and subsequent years | June 1 of the sixth year following the distribution year |
In light of the initial June 2020 deadline (for royalty years 1998-2000), we strongly recommend that you inform us as soon as possible (no later than June 1, 2020) of all sound recordings in which you were involved that you have not already submitted to Artisti. If you are eligible for royalties for 1998-2000, the last royalties for that period will be paid out in 2022.
Many thanks for your attention,
The Artisti team
